High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory education. It is also referred to as the later portion of compulsory secondary education, whereas the broader term "secondary education" in many contexts, may also mean and include various voluntary post High School education or vocational schools, including colleges and university degree programs. Context usages aside, secondary education is preceded by primary education, which is known in North America as elementary education, and preceded by an earlier age grouped phase of compulsory secondary education known variously as "Middle School" or "Junior High School".
